  • Ryoanji Temple

The first stop on our tour will be Nijo Castle, which was built about 400 years ago as accommodations for the Tokugawa shoguns when visiting Kyoto. Visitors enter the Ninomaru Palace inside through the decorative Karamon Gate. The palace is an elaborately ornamented residence featuring impressive symbols of the shogun’s power and wealth, such as beautiful wall paintings and transoms.

Moving on, we will explore Kinkaku-ji Temple. Here you can see the amazing Golden Pavilion. Covered in an abundant amount of gold leaf, it sits on the edge of a beautiful pond, where you can see the brilliant structure’s reflection gleaming on the water’s surface. It is a picturesque sight that will take your breath away.

Nearby is Ryoan-ji Temple, which marks a stark yet interesting contrast to the Golden Pavilion. This Zen temple is renowned for the dry landscape garden comprising only rocks and gravel, no water. Here you can relax as you take in this simple beauty in a garden representing the spirit of Zen.

Lastly, we will visit Arashiyama. This district is home to Tenryu-ji Temple, whose garden, created around a pond with mountains towering in the background, is one of the most impressive in Kyoto. The garden, which has remained in its original form since the early 14th century, garden presents a different splendor with each season. Just outside the temple’s exit is a bamboo forest where you can embrace a mysterious yet serene atmosphere.
