Places we will visit

  • Kinkakuji Temple
  • Ryoanji Temple
  • Myoshinji Temple

This tour of Zen temples in the northwest part of Kyoto beings with Kinkaku-ji Temple. Covered in an abundant amount of gold leaf, the Golden Pavilion sits on the edge of a beautiful pond, where you can see the brilliant structure’s reflection gleaming on the water’s surface. It is a picturesque sight that will take your breath away.

Our next Zen temple, Ryoan-ji, is renowned for the dry landscape garden comprising only rocks and gravel, no water. Here you can relax as you take in this simple beauty in a garden representing the spirit of Zen.

Our final stop is Myoshin-ji Temple. Founded about 700 years ago, Myoshin-ji is a complex of 46 subtemples, but only a few are open to the public. The 600-year-old Taizo-in Zen Buddhist Temple is one of them. Here there are two dry landscape gardens. The highlight, though, is the much greener garden around a pond. It is a gorgeous sight in all seasons. There is a weeping cherry blossom tree in early spring, wisterias in late spring, lotus flowers in summer, and of course colorful leaves in autumn. You can also view a famous India ink painting depicting a koan, a question a Zen master gives to his disciples to help them achieve Enlightenment.
