Our itinerary begins with a visit to Nanzen-ji Temple. Your visit to this Zen temple, founded in the late 13th century, begins with an impressive wooden gate and the spacious surroundings, where the leaves transform into a brilliant red in autumn. You’ll also notice a more modern aqueduct running through the temple grounds. It was constructed over a century ago. Nanzen-ji also has beautiful dry landscape gardens.

Next, we will head over to the Uji area, which is famous for tea and its association with the Japanese literary classic, “The Tale of Genji.” Flowing nearby is the Uji River, where cormorant fishing takes place in summer. On our way to Byodo-in Temple, we will pass by many stores selling tea and tea-flavored sweets. Some of the tea shops have been in business for centuries. You will notice the soothing aroma of tea in the air. We will then enter Byodo-in Temple. The impressive Phoenix Hall and the surrounding pond and garden represent the Buddhist Pure Land. You can also see the hall on the 10-yen coin. Inside the hall is a large wooden statue of the Buddha Amitabha, who welcomes visitors with a calmingly gentle face.
